Likely my next car after my 2018 is through the warranty period, so I’ve been anticipating it . No real surprises though. I like the exterior. My only reservation is that the interior looks a bit drab at first glance, not quite as classy-looking as the 7.5 perhaps. But maybe that’s just because there’s not as much going on without any buttons . And it looks like it’s missing something without a stick.
Thoughts?

It looks like it has an Angry, disinterested “ O” face.

Needs more manual. Can you even get one with a gear shift in the US?

Are you supposed to shift strictly using only your index finger and thumb?

Yeah, but they are plagued with problems. The clutch is good enough for stock power, if the stock power was actually at the crank, but it’s not. Upgrading that can lead to crank walk. And then there was the recall for the 2019's, where the manuals would just randomly stall.

My understanding is VW has confirmed it will still be available with a manual in the US.

Hey it looks like a GTI. I don’t get why the MK7 Facebook page is so against this. The front air dam is probably the worst part, but the fog light integration is kinda cool. Agree on the interior, I would certainly miss my easy to use knobs.

People will complain about any changes. I was a bit iffy about the outside of the Mk8 at first, but it’s grown on me. I really like the light strip that goes all the way across the front, and the foglights are interesting. Overall I don’t know if I like it more than the 7.5, but I don’t think I like it less either.
One thing I don’t think I care for is the new plaid pattern. The Mk7's seems more vibrant to me.

As a current MK7 owner I’m in the minority but I love the sharper styling. I’ll probably replace my 2015 with one in a couple of years.

Some plaid is better than none, but I’m not thrilled with that either. Kinda reminds me of MK5 plaid. Also interesting they’re integrating the headrest in the seat as well. Looks like a current generation Civic Si seat.

I had a 2001 Golf with a 5-speed that was totaled by a drunk. 15 years, 224k miles, original clutch. I really miss that car.

On an only slightly related note: I wish they would make an S3 with a manual in the US. And throw some LSD’s at it while you’re on the subject.
I think this looks fine. Basic VW look with an OK interior.
HOLD ON. TIME OUT. Does this thing have no analog climate control buttons or knobs?
If so, Haaaaard pass

The fog lights are strange and distracting. Otherwise looks very much like the current version.

Directional-spoke wheels that aren’t left-right mirrors give me serious agita.
Even my 86 RX-7 had left and rights.

This is just a Mk6-7 issue, and possibly 8. Only the future knows.

As a current MK7 owner, if I had to replace it I would look for a used MK7.5, because I like the buttons on the interior and don’t need a big screen (my 2020 Outback has convinced me of that).
I think the exterior of the MK8 looks good, but not so different that it would push me to want to buy new.
